Adele Dubois: Introversion Has Its Price

Please welcome erotic romance author Adele Dubois to the blog. Her newest release is Rev Me Twice, with Ellora's Cave.

I haven’t always been an introvert. Back in the day, I was outgoing and comfortable in my own skin. During my childhood and teens, I performed on stage in community theatre. In my teens and twenties, I modeled in fashion shows. My job as a newspaper reporter and columnist required that I be affable and on the go. For years, I loved meeting new people and traveling to exotic places.

These days, I’m more comfortable inside my home office, alone with my manuscripts. And therein lies the problem. When I turned to fiction writing full-time, my imaginary world expanded while my social life contracted. I transformed from an extrovert to an introvert and discovered I liked the change of pace.

Introversion, however, comes with a price. My public speaking skills have rusted and my wardrobe needs updating. It’s hard to dress for success when your favorite clothes are baggy pants, shirts embossed with snowmen, and wool slippers. These days, dressing up for me means clean jeans with a grown-up blouse and real shoes.

If you see me at a writers’ conference or readers’ convention, please stop and say hello. Notice my make-up and stylish clothes and remember I wore them just for you. Otherwise, I’d be holed up inside my home office, writing books in my pajamas, wondering where the heck the day went.

  1. I must admit that I'm an introvert. That's the beautiful thing about writing, because I can say things on paper that I'd never say out loud! It's nice to see Adele here today - she is a wonderful source of support for our group of romance writers!

  4. I haven't had a shy day in my life, but I do get the wearing sweats and slippers all day. Dressing up to me means actually getting out of my PJs. I too need a new wardrobe and look forward to getting one before going to my next conference.

  7. I'm a an introvert who can switch to extrovert for short social bursts. I love being around people and enjoy the energy of their company but my work and lifestyle has always meant working quietly alone...
These days getting dressed-up in real clothes and having the chance to be an extrovert is a rare treat!
I do hope I have the opportunity some day to meet you at a conference and see your beautiful face in person.

  8. I sooo get the introvert/extrovert thing. Since I'm still working full time I have to dress up daily and turn on the charm. Sitting in my home office in front of the keyboard, dressed in pj's and slippers sounds heavenly...but I could easily get sucked into the introvert side if/when I reach that stage.

Good to see a potential problem coming and put a plan in place. Have one I can borrow?

Great interview. Can't wait to read Rev Me Twice!

  9. Adele,
I know exactly what you're saying. I'm an introvert who can be an extrovert when I have to. When I worked fulltime I dressed up every day. I still have a closet full of business clothes I'll probably never wear again. Now that I'm home all day I'm getting to be more of an introvert. Gone are the nice dress clothes in favor of sweats and socks and slippers. I have to force myself to put on jeans and nice shoes to go out to the store. In fact, I have to force myself to go out most days. It's so much more comfortable to stay home in front of the computer. I can't wait to read your next book.

  11. Kat--I do hope to meet you at a conference this year. One of my New Year's resolutions is to attend at least three conference events. I'll look for you! Thanks so much for stopping by.

Renee--It's easy as pie to get used to being comfortable while working at home. I'm sure you won't have a problem adjusting. The only caveat is that it's also easy to become undisciplined. The secret is to keep regular office hours even though you're working at home. Thanks for posting. I hope you enjoy REV ME TWICE!

Cara--It's easy to become a homebody, isn't it? I love not having to go out to work anymore. Thanks so much for your continued support.

Kari--I appreciate your visit and your comment. Thank you!

  12. Boy oh boy, Adele, does this sound like me. Add sipping hot chocolate to the all-day in PJs thing and I'm in hog heaven. So why don't I get more written? Grumble, grumble.
